UK Expats - Democrats Abroad Wants You!

Today I received this email from Stan Grossman, membership coordinator for Democrats Abroad (UK):

Dear Member of DAUK,

Thanks to the efforts of many new -- and not so new members -- our membership now stands above 1900. It stood at 1400 in early September. We have five weeks to go until the end of the year and, with students and other groups getting active, we have a chance of reaching our membership goal. But we need your help to do so.

Over 1000 of you will receive this email. Please sign up a few new members. Ask your American friends. Go to a holiday party where Americans living in the UK are present and ask them to join us. All we need is a name, an email address and a voting state (other contact details are helpful). This should be emailed to me and to: membership@democratsabroad.org.uk

With your help we can start our 2004 Get Out The Vote efforts with a greater initial reach which will help us make sure that as many Americans as possible will have registered in time and requested their ballots to vote. More members by January 1st also means that the votes we cast at the UK Caucus on February 9 will carry more weight in determining our Presidential candidate.

We need your help to defeat George W Bush in 2004.

Regards,

Stan

Stanley Grossman
DAUK Membership Coordinator

I urge all of you American expats who have not yet registered with Democrats Abroad to do so now, and get your friends registered as well.

Unlike Republicans Abroad, the worldwide membership of Democrats Abroad actually has a voting stake in the primaries and sends delegates to the Democratic National Convention. By registering with Democrats Abroad you actually get the chance to influence which candidate will eventually get selected to run against George Bush next year.

It is important that you register before the end of the year as that is the cutoff date for Democrats Abroad's worldwide tally of the various country memberships and how many votes each country can cast.

There are no membership fees, you will only receive one or two emails a month, and you will be kept in the loop regarding Get Out the Vote efforts and details of absentee ballot procedures.

Now is the right time to get involved. Please do!

Democrats.

Pfah. That "party" is almost non-existent. It's just a group of people calling themselves 'Democrats', but in reality, it's just a collection of individual politicians voting in favor of Republican / Bush proposals because they think such voting behaviour will serve them well in any upcoming Congressional elections. "Hey, I voted in favour, now elect me!" blablabla. Scared because of their jobs, not inflamed because of principle. Just see what happened during the voting for the Medicare bill.

Sad. If I were an American, I definitely would not vote Republican, but certainly not Democratic either.

Kaj, I agree, the Democratic Party isn't in its best shape. But our purpose here is to get Bush out of office, and we need to work with what we've got. Unfortunately, a truly progressive independent candidate would never make it in the current political system, so our only option to oppose Bush is to side with the Dems and whichever candidate gets picked. Fortunately, we can have a hand in picking that candidate, through registering as Democrats and voting in the primaries, and by joining Dems Abroad to influence their vote. In choosing between action and apathy, I'll choose action.

Sarah,

With all due respect, "vote for a Democratic candidate whichever gets picked " just because it's against Bush, what kind of nonsense is that?
Can we also make clear that a "Progressive" is just another name for a "Liberal". Come on, I am a Democrat and I don't buy that line you and other's in the Democratic Party are trying to sell. If there ever was a reason that the Democratic Party is in such chaos, disorganization, and out of touch it's because Liberals have brought it to that point. Yes, that's correct, Liberals in the Democratic Party have created the situation it currently is in.

Why? Because contrary to your belief and contrary to what many other's of the Liberal persuasion would like to believe and would have us believe the majority of US, The People, don't believe in your line anymore. No doubt that will launch a venemous barrage of shouting and name calling from you and other's. But, that doesn't change the truth. That's correct, The Truth!!!

Don't think for one minute that I would vote for a Democrat just because it's against Bush and I assure you I'm not the only DEMOCRAT who feels that way. Oh, I'm quite sure that many of you like Feinstein will stand up and start claiming "You're Bad Democrats!!!". That's a lot of BS. I'm not about to follow the mob mentality over the cliff just because I'm told to or because it's a Democrat. I don't adhere to the idea of "My Party, Right or Wrong.." concept.

If We, in the Democratic Party, don't have GOOD candidates to vote for then perhaps it's time to start looking elsewhere in the Party rather than the "ESTABLISHMENT"? Don't you think?

Where do I contact Democrats abroad in Northern Ireland and could someone get me absentee ballot for Massachusetts?
